Timkat, also known as Timquat, is the celebration of Epiphany in Ethiopia and Eritrea. According to the Ethiopian calendar, the date falls on January 19 in the regular year and January 20 in a leap year, corresponding with January 10 in Terr.
Ethiopia and Eritrea, approximately half of the inhabitants, are part of two Oriental Orthodox churches collectively known as Orthodox Tewahedo. This Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church was granted autonomy by the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria in 1959. The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church was officially separated from the first in 1993 after Eritrean recognition of its independence from Ethiopia.
Orthodox Tewahedo congregations use their Ethiopian calendar to fulfil liturgical reasons. It is founded in the Coptic calendar, somewhat comparable to the Julian calendar used in The Eastern Orthodox Church. This is why Ethiopian and Eritrean Epiphany, named Timkat, generally coincides with Epiphany of the Eastern Orthodox Church (January 19); however, it is celebrated on the following day during leap years in Ethiopia.
