Many visitors travelling with a licensed Eritrean operator can apply for a 30-day tourist visa on arrival in Asmara, and we arrange your Letter of Invitation in advance. Visa on arrival is not available to every nationality and can never be fully guaranteed (the final decision always rests with Eritrean immigration), so we confirm what applies to your passport before you travel. Fly into Asmara International Airport (ASM), connecting via Cairo, Dubai, Jeddah or Istanbul. There is no direct Asmara–Addis flight and land borders are closed, so Ethiopia routes through a third-country hub. We advise routing and meet every guest on arrival. How to plan your Eritrea trip →
Beyond roughly 25 km outside Asmara, Eritrea requires a government travel permit for each region you visit. A licensed guide is not legally required, but the permits and vehicle paperwork are far simpler to arrange through an operator, so we secure every permit for you and provide a licensed local guide or driver before you arrive. No. Eritrea is one of Africa's most affordable destinations on the ground. A meal at a typical Asmara restaurant costs roughly USD 18–25, and the city's famous Italian-style macchiato is about a dollar or less. Eritrea is a cash-only economy: there are no functioning ATMs and international cards are not accepted anywhere, including hotels. Please bring all the money you will need as physical cash in US dollars (euros are also accepted): clean, recent-series notes, ideally a mix of crisp USD 100 bills for the best exchange rate plus smaller denominations for daily costs. Exchange only at official Himbol bureaus and keep your receipts.
Eritrea has very low crime and Asmara is regarded as one of Africa's safest capital cities. Petty theft is rare and visitors, including women, generally feel safe walking day or night. It does carry a Level 2 travel advisory for non-crime reasons such as landmines in remote border areas and permits required for travel beyond Asmara, all of which we handle for you: travel outside the capital is arranged with the right permits and a local guide or driver. US citizens are welcome in Eritrea but do need a visa. Travelling with us, we arrange your Letter of Invitation and apply for a visa on arrival in Asmara. As with any nationality, though, we cannot guarantee it, since approval is always at immigration's discretion. The government fee is USD 70 (cash, on arrival) plus our service fee. Connectivity in Eritrea is slow and limited: foreign SIM cards do not work, mobile data is scarce, and Wi-Fi is available only in some Asmara hotels and cafes.
